Which balloon size should we get? An 800 gram balloon will burst around 90,000 – 100,000 feet. A 1200 gram balloon will burst around 105,000 to 110,000 feet. These numbers are based on assumptions about payload weight and diameter of the balloon at launch.
I don’t really feel the need to get up over 100,000 feet, and I’ve been incorrectly assuming that filling the 1200 gram balloon would be a lot more expensive than filling the 800 gram balloon. Wrong! In both cases, it’s recommended that we fill to a diameter of about 6′. The difference, then, assuming that we keep the payload constant, is basically that the 1200 gram balloon will rise higher before popping. With that in mind, the decision hinges on a cost difference of $25 for the actual balloon. We should discuss this Monday morning and place an order for one of these balloons.
